Abstract The symmetry properties of both the angular momentum representation and the plane wave representation of the planar scattering matrix are derived and discussed. The generalized optical theorem is obtained from the current balance of the muffin‐tin layer. For the case without absorbing medium the absorption matrix of the muffin‐tin layer is calculated in terms of the partial absorption cross sections of the muffin‐tins.
