Abstract The scattering of cold neutrons from an imperfect flux line lattice (FLL) is analysed. It turns out to be possible by suitable experiments to distinguish between distortions due to pinning centres and those of grown‐in intrinsic defects of the FLL, and thus to obtain valuable information on the interaction forces between pinning centres and flux lines from the shape of the scattering intensity profiles.
