Abstract The role of the dipole–dipole interaction reservoir (DDR) of impurity ions in the nuclear relaxation is considered based on the idea of the interaction temperature between the nuclear and the dipole–dipole systems. The condition in which the DDR can be heated and the effect of this heating on nuclear relaxation are investigated. The expression has been obtained which takes into account the role of transverse components of the magnetic moment of impurity ions in nuclear relaxation.
