Abstract The polarization of the visible luminescence of cubic ZnS:Mn single crystals under excitation with light has been investigated. The influence of birefringence of faulted ZnS on the polarization results has been calculated. The 585 nm emission band, attributed to Mn as impurity, is never polarized, whereas other emission bands at 700, 475, 410, and 385 nm show polarization under polarized excitation. The experimental results exclude band‐models. The 585 nm emission probably originates from a Mn‐center with symmetry T d . The other emission bands can only originate from centers having symmetry C 3v , C 2v or C s .
