Abstract High resolution LMM Auger spectra of germanium are reported showing fine structure not previously observed and interpreted. The Auger spectra were obtained by X‐ray excitation and analyzed under high resolution with an electrostatic analyzer. The observed fine structure for the LMM transitions L 3 M 23 M 45 , L 3 M 45 M 45 , and L 2 M 23 M 45 can not be interpreted within the j‐j coupling model but fits better into the pure L‐S coupling scheme of the final vacancies of the Ge atom.
