Abstract New absorption centers giving bands with maxima at 555 nm (Y) and 625 nm (Y′) at liquid‐nitrogen temperature, were observed in OH–containing KCl single crystals annealed in vacuum a t 600 °C and subsequently uv irradiated. The thermal bleaching of these bands yields F centers. Optical bleaching of Y′ yields increase of intensity of Y and F bands and vice versa. The Y and Y′ centers can be converted into F centers by compressing the crystal. This reaction is accompanied by emission of 460 nm light. Study of the effect of ambient atmospheres upon formation of these centers suggests the involvement of oxygen molecule ions present in the crystals.
