Abstract A pseudo‐potential approach is developed for complex systems having two valence electrons. The dependence of the parameters of the model potential operator V M upon the energy and orbital quantum number of the valence electron is shown to be important in the problems considered. The method gives the excited states of atoms and impurity centres and the interaction of an electron in an impurity ion with the regular ions of the lattice. The optical excitation energy of luminescence centres obtained by a variational method is in good agreement with empirical data. The work can be regarded as a basis for including the correlation of extra electrons in calculations on impurities.
