Abstract The crystal field potential of an octahedral site in the lattice of a normal, and an inverse spinel is calculated on the basis of the point charge model. The ten nearest neighbouring environments are taken into account. Finally, the tables of the matrix elements of the operator equivalents O   2 1and O   4 1for J = 1/2, 1, 3/2, …, 8 are given.
