An optimal control problem of the full time‐dependent Maxwell equations and its numerical approximation are presented. A mixed finite element discretization in space and a Crank‐Nicolson scheme for the time‐dependent Maxwell equation lead to a discretized optimal control problem. A numerical example illustrates our approach.
