A novel configuration for estimating the broadband permittivity of small fluid volumes is presented using 2‐port S‐parameters. Unlike previous demonstrations in coplanar technology, our proposal places the analyte under a microstrip trace where better field overlap with the fluid improves device sensitivity. Fluid parameter estimates based on simulation are presented. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 56:2604–2608, 2014
