Abstract A new S‐band element design of S/L‐band dual‐band dual‐polarized shared‐aperture array antenna for synthetic aperture radar applications is introduced, where the stacked patch structure is used to achieved broadband characteristics and especially the unsymmetrical crossed‐slots are adopted to improve the isolation and cross‐polarization performances both of the antenna element. By using this design with the antiphase feeding technique applied in the array, the array isolation of better than −45 dB is measured over the bandwidth 16.0%, while the measured array cross‐polarization level in 3dB beam width of −30 dB for vertical polarization and that of −28 dB for horizontal polarization are achieved. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
