Abstract Numerical and experimental study of the effect of the ground plane size on radiation pattern of microstrip antenna on thick substrate is presented in the article. First the results of simulations and measurements of reference microstrip antenna are shown. Next the ground plane sizes were reduced in both x and y directions and the side lobes and backward lobe levels were calculated and measured. It was shown how far we can reduce the size of ground plane without important deterioration of the antenna pattern. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
