Abstract The effect of Raman amplification on packet based networks is analyzed. The impact of this technique is compared with the one based on EDFA amplification in terms of packet quality degradation in a point to point link. Low impact on the Q factor (less than 0.05 dB) of the packet occupancy density was observed for the Raman amplification scheme. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
