Abstract A compact coplanar waveguide (CPW) defected ground structure is investigated. Its frequency characteristics are modeled by full‐wave EM simulations. Some applications are investigated, including two electronic bandgap (EBG) devices which are constructed based on a periodical structure of the proposed defected ground without and with loading of lumped‐element capacitors. Also, a varactor‐tuned defected ground structure of this type has been demonstrated. The theoretical, simulated, and experimental results are presented. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
