Abstract In this paper, a microstrip patch antenna array on ground with PBG is simulated and measured. It is shown that the photonic band‐gap (PBG) can suppress harmonics and optimize the current distribution on the patches. As a result, the gain of the antenna array is improved and the side‐lobe level is reduced. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
