Abstract A novel double‐layer patch array antenna is presented. The proposed antenna consists of two identical parallel layers, each containing five patch elements. The antenna is fed through one of the elements in the lower layer while other elements act as parasitic antenna elements. Both simulated and experimental results show that the proposed antenna has a relatively high gain, low side‐lobes, and improved cross polarization. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
