We propose a framework for modelling situation awareness (SA) in joint cognitive systems (JCS) of humans and machines. The key idea is to adopt a building block approach. The building block encapsulates the extant, mature theory of SA in an individual agent, for their individual workflows. We then articulate rules for assembling agents, for workflows that run across the JCS. Systems engineers gain an analytic tool and design patterns for improving SA in JCS, leveraging the potential of modern, digital technology.
