The systems engineering approach of a product developer is strongly influenced by the business relationships with customers. The model presented in this paper characterizes those relationships and provides a framework for understanding why some developments are successful while others have little chance of success. The model is then used to examine more complex scenarios and transitions between scenarios to help understand some of the business management challenges encountered in a heterogeneous mix of business scenarios. A notation for describing these relationships is introduced to facilitate describing the individual scenarios.
