With the completion of the second volume of Epilepsia Open, the editors wish to express their gratitude to our editorial board, peer reviewers and submitting authors for the steady increase in the high quality science that is published in our journal. Epilepsia Open has already been registered in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) and we are currently anticipating the decision on the inclusion to Pubmed Central, which will soon allow all published open access articles to appear in Pubmed. These early successful milestones could not have been possible without the increasing interest of our readership in submitting their manuscripts to our journal and the meticulous work of our editorial board in ensuring that we attract and publish high quality articles. As a token of our appreciation and to highlight some of the best original Epilepsia Open research articles we are initiating the two new Epilepsia Open Prizes, starting in 2018, which will be given to the two best original articles, clinical and basic science, that were published during the preceding year. The awardees will be nominated and selected by our editorial board, Editors-in Chief and the ILAE President. The Prize will be awarded at the International (odd years) or Regional Epilepsy Congresses (even years) where the awardees will be invited to attend, with their travel expenses covered. We decided to award these prizes to the first authors of the manuscripts, provided that they are under 45 years of age, to encourage these young talented researchers in their pursuit of a successful independent career. The announcements of the new Epilepsia Open Clinical Science Prize and the Epilepsia Open Basic Science Prize are appended to this editorial.
