Abstract A general rate equation is derived for crystallization and precipitation which takes into account the effects of initial supersaturation and particle density change during the process. Three special cases are distinguished, including those spontaneously initiated. Pitfalls are indicated in interpreting growth rate data for sparingly soluble salts.
