Abstract The behavioural features of the IMF B z component for different solar wind velocity regimes have been studied. The study revealed a significant difference in variations of the B z component between high‐speed and low‐speed regimes. Formation mechanisms for the IMF meridional component as well as the relationship of B z with dynamical properties of the large‐scale magnetic fields on the Sun are discussed.
