This work studies synergies arising from combining industrial demand responseand local renewable electricity supply. To this end, we optimize the design ofa local electricity generation and storage system with an integrated demandresponse scheduling of a continuous power-intensive production process in amulti-stage problem. We optimize both total annualized cost and global warmingimpact and consider local photovoltaic and wind electricity generation, anelectric battery, and electricity trading on day-ahead and intraday market. Wefind that installing a battery can reduce emissions and enable large tradingvolumes on the electricity markets, but significantly increases cost. Economicand ecologic process and battery operation are driven primarily by theelectricity price and grid emission factor, respectively, rather than locallygenerated electricity. A parameter study reveals that economic savings from thelocal system and flexibilizing the process behave almost additive.
