Research of cosmic rays at the Physical Institute of the USSR Academy ofSciences resulted in the construction of the JINR Synchrophasotron. For thispurpose the Electrophysical Laboratory of the USSR Academy of Sciences wasfounded in 1953, which became part of JINR in 1956 as the High EnergyLaboratory. The initial milestones to develop experiments at the Laboratory onthe Synchrophasotron are presented. Leaders and key participants in theexperiments are highlighted, as well as the lessons and results relevant today.
