We give a simple and uniform proof of a conjecture of Haines-Richarzcharacterizing the smooth locus of Schubert varieties in twisted affineGrassmannians. Our method is elementary and avoids any representation theoretictechniques, instead relying on a combinatorial analysis of tangent spaces ofSchubert varieties.
