Proximity phenomena and induced superconducting correlations inheterostructures are shown to be strongly affected by the nonlocal nature ofthe electronic attraction. The latter can trigger the formation of Cooper pairsconsisting of electrons localized in neighbouring layers even in the absence ofdirect quasiparticle transfer between the layers. We investigate themanifestations of such nonlocal pairing and resulting unconventional inducedsuperconductivity in an exemplary two-dimensional (2D) electronic systemcoupled to a conventional superconductor. The interplay between thequasiparticle tunneling and spin-triplet interlayer pairing is shown togenerate the odd-frequency superconducting correlations in the 2D materialwhich give rise to the paramagnetic contribution to the Meissner response andaffect the energy resolved quasiparticle density of states. Experimentalevidence for the above nonlocal interface pairing would provide newperspectives in engineering the unconventional superconducting correlations inheterostructures.
