The most significant advances in the accelerator-based light sources (i.e.,x-ray free electron lasers) are driven by the development of bunch compressionand high-brightness sources in the last several decades. For bunch compression,the symmetric four-dipole $C$-chicane is typically exploited since it issimple, effective, and naturally dispersion-free at all orders. However, theemission of the coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR), becomes a maincontributing factor to transverse emittance degradation during bunchcompression. Suppressing CSR effect is necessary otherwise the anticipativecompression schemes are susceptible to beam quality degradation. To alleviatethis difficulty, this paper reports a CSR-cancelled theoretical design forasymmetric $C$- and $S$-chicanes. The CSR cancelation conditions of the twochicanes are derived with the aid of the point-kick model. A rigorous analysisis provided to verify the proposed CSR cancelation conditions for asymmetric$C$- and $S$-chicanes, performed by the integration method and ELEGANTsimulations. Compared to the symmetric $C$- and $S$-chicanes with identicalbunch compression targets, the CSR-induced emittance growth of the asymmetricones can be reduced by two orders of magnitude and at the order of 0.1\%. Thedemonstration of this novel discovery opens the door for the chicane bunchcompressors to meet the ever-increasing demands of future acceleratorapplications, particularly important in the field of x-ray free electronlasers.
