We present the Bidimensional Exploration of the warm-Temperature Ionised gaS(BETIS) project, designed for the spatial and spectral study of the DiffuseIonised Gas (DIG) in a selection of 265 spiral galaxies observed with MUSE, ofdifferent morphologies and an average spatial resolution of 274 pc (z<0.06).Our main objective is to study the ionisation mechanisms at play within the DIGby analysing the distribution of various species in the optical spectra. Weintroduce a new methodology for defining the DIG, employing an innovativeadaptive binning technique on the observed datacube based on the spectroscopicsignal-to-noise ratio (SN) of the [S II] line, in order to increase the SN ofthe rest of the lines. Subsequently, we create a DIG mask by subtracting theemission associated with both bright and faint H II regions. We also examinethe suitability of using H{\alpha} equivalent width (EW(H{\alpha})) as a proxyfor defining the DIG and its associated ionisation regime. Notably, forEW(H{\alpha})< 3{\AA}, the measured value is contingent on the chosenpopulation synthesis technique performed. Our analysis in a showcase subsamplereveals a consistent cumulative DIG fraction across them, averaging around40%-70%. The average radial distribution of the main line ratios are enhancedin the DIG regimes (up to 0.2 dex), and follows similar trends between the DIGand the H II regions, as well as H{\alpha} surface brightness, indicating acorrelation between the ionisation of these species in both the DIG and the HII regions. The DIG loci in the BPT diagrams are found within the line ratiosthat correspond to photoionisation due to the star formation. There is anoffset corresponding to ionisation due to fast shocks, primarily due to thecontribution of the two Seyfert galaxies in our subsample, which closely alignwith models of ionisation from fast shocks, thus mimicking the DIG emission.
