Unpleasant social interactions on the road can have negative consequencesthat affect driving safety. Any technological interventions to address thesecommon occurrences need to be built on an understanding of the nature of socialdiscomfort in vehicles. This paper contributes fine-grained empirical analysisand a proposed definition and categorization of the problem of socialdiscomfort in cars to the HCI literature. We recorded nine families going ondrives and performed interaction analysis on this data. Discomfort in the carcould be divided into (1) local and full-body physical discomfort and (2)individual, social, or cognitive-load-related psychological discomfort. Wedefine three strategies to address discomfort: contextual mediation, socialmediation, and social support. We discuss three video excerpts in detail toillustrate the mitigation strategies. This work lays the foundation for thedesign of interactive vehicular systems for mitigating social discomfort.
