Internet of Things (IoT) technologies are the foundation of a fully connectedworld. Currently, IoT devices (or nodes) primarily use dedicated sensors tosense and collect data at large scales, and then transmit the data to targetnodes or gateways through wireless communication for further processing andanalytics. In recent years, research efforts have been made to explore thefeasibility of using wireless communication for sensing (while assiduouslyimproving the transmission performance of wireless signals), in an attempt toachieve integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) for smart IoT of thefuture. In this paper, we leverage the capabilities of LoRa, a long-range IoTcommunication technology, to explore the possibility of using LoRa signals forboth sensing and communication. Based on LoRa, we propose ISAC designs in twotypical scenarios of smart IoT, and verify the feasibility and effectiveness ofour designs in soil moisture monitoring and human presence detection.
