Configuring TiO2 into bicontinuous mesostructures greatly improves itsphotocatalytic efficiency. This is often ascribed to the expanded surface area.Yet, whether mesostructuring modulates TiO2's electronic structure and how thatcontributes to the improvement are rarely discussed. Here, we employedspectroscopic and density functional theory approaches to address the question.It is found that the improved efficacy could arise from an expansion in surfacearea and elevation in density of states, both of which might collectively leadto the observed reduction in charge-carrier recombination.
