Empirical research on perception and cognition has laid the foundation forvisualization design, often yielding useful design guidelines forpractitioners. However, it remains uncertain how well practitioners stayinformed about the latest findings in visualization research. In this paper, weemployed a mixed-method approach to explore the knowledge gap betweenvisualization research and real-world design guidelines. We initially collectedexisting design guidelines from various sources and empirical studies frommajor publishing venues, analyzing their alignment and uncovering missing linksand contradictory knowledge. Subsequently, we conducted surveys and interviewswith practitioners and researchers to gain further insights into theirexperiences and attitudes towards design guidelines and empirical studies, andtheir views on the knowledge gap between research and practice. Our findingshighlight the similarities and differences in their perspectives and proposestrategies to bridge the divide in visualization design knowledge.
