A key challenge in materials discovery is to find a viable high temperaturesuperconductor. Hydrogen and hydride materials have long been consideredpromising materials displaying conventional phonon-mediated superconductivity.However, the high pressures required to stabilise these materials haverestricted their application. Here, we present results from high-throughputcomputation, considering a wide range of high-symmetry ternary hydrides fromacross the periodic table at ambient-pressure. This large composition space isthen reduced by considerations of thermodynamic, dynamic and magneticstability, before direct estimations of the superconducting criticaltemperature. This approach, combined with first-principles structure predictionhas revealed a metastable ambient-pressure hydride superconductor,Mg$_2$IrH$_6$, with a predicted critical temperature of 160K, comparable to thehighest temperature superconducting cuprates. We propose a synthesis route viaa structurally related insulator, Mg$_2$IrH$_7$, which is thermodynamicallystable above 15GPa and discuss the potential challenges in doing so. Thissupports a long-held hypothesis that, hydrogen, in the right chemicalenvironment, can promote high-temperature superconductivity at ambientpressure.
