We consider a model consisting of a quintessence coupled to the Ricci scalarand the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. We propose a mechanism for the rising of darkenergy in the matter era, alleviating the coincidence problem. The role of theGauss-Bonnet invariant is to restore the initial $Z_2$ symmetry. The Ricciscalar breaks this symmetry during the Universe's expansion and activates thequintessence. In our model, the observational constraint on gravitational wavespeed is respected.
