Global challenges like climate change may be considered as collective actionproblems that require sufficient cooperation with pro-mitigation norms, soonenough to be effective. Socio-political polarization is a barrier to collectiveaction. Prior agent-based models of behavioural change on structured networksin a shared socio-political environment have shown that polarization emergesnaturally in such systems and that the speed of consensus formation is limitedby the rate at which polarized clusters can be dissolved. Here we study howguided social link rewiring affects the speed of network depolarization. Weinvestigate rewiring algorithms representing random meetings, introduction bymutual acquaintances, and bridging between socially distant communities. Wefind that building lasting links between polarized individuals and communitiescan accelerate consensus formation when the sociopolitical environment isfavourable. This strengthens the evidence that promoting connection betweenpolarized communities could accelerate collective action on urgent globalchallenges.
