This study introduces a novel approach to composite design by employingaperiodic monotiles, shapes that cover surfaces without translational symmetry.Using a combined computational and experimental approach, we study the fracturebehavior of composites crafted with these monotiles, and compared theirperformance against conventional honeycomb patterns. Remarkably, our aperiodicmonotile-based composites exhibited superior stiffness, strength, and toughnessin comparison to honeycomb designs. This study suggests that leveraging theinherent disorder of aperiodic structures can usher in a new generation ofrobust and resilient materials.
