Understanding the optical emission characteristics of semiconductornanostructures is important when determing their device applicability. Theemission depends on the material and its geometry, but also depends on otherprocesses such as thermal escape from the nanostructure. Although it is widelyaccepted that scattering involving longitudinal optical phonons is the keyprocess in thermal escape, it remains unclear why some quantum structuresthermally emit excitons and other single charge carriers. To investigate thisphenomena we theoretically determine the energy levels and temperature-lifetimerelationships of quantum dots and rings. We find that replicating the observedtemperature dependence of the exciton lifetime requires both an eigenspectrumand a thermal escape mechanism which are geometry dependent. This suggests thatgeometry may be a significant factor in determining the dominant thermal escapeprocess in quantum structures.
