Local enhancement of light intensity by plasmonic nanostructures is essentialfor many optical applications, such as Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy(SERS) and fluorescence- or scattering-based plasmonic sensing. The enhancementis usually localized on the surface of each individual metal nanoparticleplaying the role of a plasmonic resonator. In some cases, however, theparticles are arranged in a periodic lattice and the excitations in them can becoupled to the surface lattice resonances (SLRs), which can additionallyenhance the field. In this work, we report a field-enhancement mechanism thatis based on the coupling between surface plasmon resonances in metalnanoparticles and Bloch modes guided by a dielectric-metal slab waveguide in aplasmonic metasurface. We demonstrate an extra factor of the local intensityenhancement of about 80 and the corresponding additional SERS enhancement ofmore than 6000 compared to isolated plasmonic nanoparticles on a thick glasssubstrate. This mechanism opens the possibility to design extraordinarilyefficient metal-dielectric metasurfaces for many applications in optics andphotonics, including SERS, fluoresence spectroscopy, nonlinear optics, andsolar energy harvesting.
