This study investigates simpler alternatives to coherent joint transmissionfor supporting robust connectivity against signal blockage in mmWave/sub-THzaccess networks. By taking an information-theoretic viewpoint, we demonstrateanalytically that with a careful design, full macrodiversity gains andsignificant SNR gains can be achieved through canonical receivers and minimalcoordination and synchronization requirements at the infrastructure side. Ourproposed scheme extends non-coherent joint transmission by employing a specialform of diversity to counteract artificially induced deep fades that wouldotherwise make this technique often compare unfavorably against standardtransmitter selection schemes. Additionally, the inclusion of an Alamouti-likespace-time coding layer is shown to recover a significant fraction of theoptimal performance. Our conclusions are based on an insightful multi-pointintermittent block fading channel model that enables rigorous ergodic andoutage rate analysis, while also considering timing offsets due to imperfectdelay compensation. Although simplified, our approach captures the essentialfeatures of modern mmWave/sub-THz communications, thereby providing practicaldesign guidelines for realistic systems.
