Using direct numerical simulations, we show that a chiral anomaly can beproduced just from spatially inhomogeneous fluctuations of the chemicalpotential, provided there is a small mean magnetic flux in the system. Theproduced chiral asymmetry in the number densities of left- and right-handedfermions causes a chiral magnetic effect, the excitation of a chiral dynamoinstability, the production of magnetically driven turbulence, and thegeneration of a large-scale magnetic field via a magnetic alpha effect from thecurrent helicity of the small-scale field.
