We investigate the computational efficiency and thermodynamic cost of theD-Wave quantum annealer under reverse-annealing with and without pausing. Ourexperimental results demonstrate that the combination of reverse-annealing andpausing leads to improved computational efficiency while minimizing thethermodynamic cost compared to reverse-annealing alone. Moreover, we find thatthe magnetic field has a positive impact on the performance of the quantumannealer during reverse-annealing but becomes detrimental when pausing isinvolved. Our results provide strategies for optimizing the performance andenergy consumption of quantum annealing systems employing reverse-annealingprotocols.
