A 2D Dirac operator with constant mass is a topological insulator, sitting inclass D of the Kitaev table. Yet, it lacks a bulk invariant due to itsnon-compact Brillouin zone. We address the issue by letting the mass depend onthe position operator in the vertical direction, interpolating between theoriginal model and its negative-mass counterpart. The resulting Hamiltonian hasa compact Brillouin zone and a well-defined bulk index. Relating the latter tothe signed number of localized chiral modes propagating along the zero-massline yields an example of bulk-edge correspondence. Identical methods revealanother instance of the correspondence, when applied to the rotatingshallow-water model with variable angular velocity.
