Aerocapture is a technique which uses atmospheric drag to decelerate aspacecraft and achieve nearly fuel-free orbit insertion from an interplanetarytrajectory. The present study performs a historical review of the field, and abibliometric data analysis of the literature from 1980 to 2023. The data offersinsights into the evolution of the field, current state of research, andpathways for its continued development. The data reveal a pattern in the riseof publications, followed by a period of stagnation, which repeats itselfapproximately once every decade. Mars is the most studied destination, whileUranus is the least studied. Prior to 2013, NASA centers produced the mostpublications and are the most cited in the field. However, academicinstitutions produced the majority of publications in the last decade. TheUnited States continues to be the leading country in terms of publications,followed by China. The Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets is the leading sourceof publications, both in terms of number and citations. NASA is the leadingfunding source, followed by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Aproposed low-cost Earth flight demonstration of aerocapture will greatly reducethe risk for future science missions.
