Tables form a central component in both exploratory data analysis and formalreporting procedures across many industries. These tables are often complex intheir conceptual structure and in the computations that generate theirindividual cell values. We introduce both a conceptual framework and areference implementation for declaring, generating, rendering and modeling suchtables. We place tables within the existing grammar of graphics paradigm forgeneral statistical visualizations. Our open source `rtables` softwareimplementation utilizes these connections to facilitate an intuitive way todeclare complex table structure and construct those tables from data. In thecourse of this work, we relax several constraints present in the traditionalgrammar of graphics framing. Finally, `rtables` models instantiated tables astree structures, which allows powerful, semantically meaningful andself-describing queries and manipulations of tables after creation. We showcaseour framework in practice by creating complex, realistic example tables.
