We show that the simplicial volume of aspherical manifolds is superadditivewith respect to gluings along certain aspherical submanifolds of the boundary.As an application, we generalize to higher dimensions a result of Soma aboutgluings of 3-manifolds along incompressible annuli in the boundary. Ourarguments are based on new results about relative bounded cohomology and pairsof multicomplexes, which are of independent interest.
