Bound states in the continuum (BICs) are localized electromagnetic modeswithin the continuous spectrum of radiating waves. Due to their infinitelifetimes without radiation losses, BICs are driving research directions inlasing, non-linear optical processes, and sensing. However, conventionalmethods for converting BICs into leaky resonances, or quasi-BICs, withhigh-quality factors typically rely on breaking the in-plane inversion symmetryof the metasurface and often result in resonances that are strongly dependenton the angle of the incident light, making them unsuitable for many practicalapplications. Here, we numerically analyze and experimentally demonstrate anemerging class of BIC-driven metasurfaces, where the coupling to the far fieldis controlled by the displacement of individual resonators. In particular, weinvestigate both all-dielectric and metallic as well as positive and inversedisplacement-mediated metasurfaces sustaining angular-robust quasi-BICs in themid-infrared spectral region. We explore their behavior with changes in theincidence angle of illumination and experimentally show their superiorperformance compared to two conventional alternatives: silicon-based tiltedellipses and cylindrical nanoholes in gold. We anticipate our findings to openexciting perspectives for bio-sensing, conformal optical devices, and photonicdevices using focused light.
