Source radiation (radiation reaction) and vacuum-field fluctuations can beseen as two inseparable contributions to processes such as spontaneousemission, the Lamb shift, or the Casimir force. Here, we propose how they canbe individually probed and their space-time structure revealed in electro-opticsampling experiments. This allows to experimentally study causality at thesingle photon level and to reveal space- and time-like correlations in thequantum vacuum. A connection to the time-domain fluctuation-dissipation theoremis also made.
