Amorphous grain boundary complexions act as toughening features within amicrostructure because they can absorb dislocations more efficiently thantraditional grain boundaries. This toughening effect should be a strongfunction of the local internal structure of the complexion, which has recentlybeen shown to be determined by grain boundary crystallography. To test thishypothesis, molecular dynamics are used here to simulate dislocation absorptionand damage nucleation for complexions with different distributions ofstructural short-range order. The complexion with a more disordered structureaway from the dislocation absorption site is actually found to better resistcrack nucleation, as damage tolerance requires delocalized deformation and theoperation of shear-transformation zones through the complexion thickness. Themore damage tolerant complexion accommodates plastic strain efficiently withinthe entire complexion, providing the key mechanistic insight that localpatterning and asymmetry of structural short-range order controls thetoughening effect of amorphous complexions.
