People who are blind employ unique strategies when performing instrumentalactivities of daily living (iADLs), often relying on multiple sensorymodalities and assistive technologies. While prior research has extensivelyexplored adaptive strategies for outdoor activities like wayfinding andnavigation, less emphasis has been placed on the information needs andproblem-solving strategies for managing domestic activities. To address thisgap, our study presents insights from 16 semi-structured interviews withindividuals who are either legally or completely blind, highlighting both thecurrent use and potential future applications of technologies for home-basediADLs. Our findings reveal several underexplored challenges, including thedifficulty of locating misplaced objects, a structured problem-solving approachwhere digital tools are a last resort, and limited awareness of assistivetraining programs. Participants also faced persistent usability barriers assoftware updates disrupted accessibility features. Participants utilize avariety of low-tech and high-tech solutions, with tactile labeling systems anddigital assistance apps being particularly prevalent. However, existingassistive technologies often fail to integrate seamlessly with users' preferredstrategies, leading to frustration and underutilization. Addressing thesebarriers is crucial for enhancing the adoption of assistive technologies andultimately improving the quality of life for people who are blind.
