We develop and apply an extension of the randomized compiling (RC) protocolthat includes \new{a special treatment of} neighboring qubits and dramaticallyreduces crosstalk \new{effects caused by the application of faulty gateson}\old{ between} superconducting qubits in IBMQ quantum computers(\texttt{ibm\_lagos} and \texttt{ibmq\_ehningen}). Crosstalk errors, stemmingfrom CNOT two-qubit gates, are a crucial source of errors on numerous quantumcomputing platforms. For the IBMQ machines, their magnitude is \older{usuallyunderestimated} \newest{often overlooked}\older{by the benchmark protocolsprovided by the manufacturer}. Our RC protocol turns coherent noise due tocrosstalk into a depolarising noise channel that can then be treated usingestablished error mitigation schemes, such as noise estimation circuits. Weapply our approach to the quantum simulation of the non-equilibrium dynamics ofthe Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) Hamiltonian for superconductivity, aparticularly challenging model to simulate on quantum hardware because of thelong-range interaction of Cooper pairs. With 135 CNOT gates, we work in aregime where crosstalk, as opposed to either trotterization or qubitdecoherence, dominates the error. Our twirling of neighboring qubits is shownto dramatically improve the noise estimation protocol without the need to addnew qubits or circuits and allows for a quantitative simulation of the BCSmodel.
