Electric anapole states, arising due to the destructive interferences ofprimitive and toroidal electric dipole moments, have been recently introducedas the fundamental class of non-scattering sources with several potentialapplications ranging from nonlinear optics to thermodynamics thanks to theirfield confinement and minimal scattering fingerprints. Nevertheless, othernon-radiating sources are also possible and can provide significant energyconfinement at the nanoscale if they spectrally overlap with their electricalcounterparts. On the other hand, super-scattering states represent the oppositeregime of light-matter interaction wherein the scattering cross-section of aparticular multipolar moment exceeds the single-channel limit, leading to astrong scattering in the direction of the pump beam. Here, we demonstrate thatthe interplay between the topology of incident light and the subwavelengthscatterer can lead to these two opposite regimes of light-matter interactionswithin an isolated all-dielectric meta-atom. In particular, we show that thepresented scatterer can support new non-scattering states, called hybridanapole, leading to significant suppression of the far-field radiation andenhancement of electromagnetic energy inside the meta-atom. We also explore therole of particle orientation and its inversion symmetry on the scatteringresponse and show how switching between non-scattering to super-scatteringstates can occur within the same platform. The presented study elucidates therole of light and matter topologies in the scattering response of subwavelengthmeta-atoms and reveals the formation of two extreme opposite regimes oflight-matter interaction, opening new avenues in several applications rangingfrom nonlinear optics to spectroscopy.
